Art has taken on various forms throughout history, evolving with the changing times and the creativity of artists. One of the artistic styles that I like to offer for both for sale and for bespoke commissions is that of single line art. This unique style of artistic expression truly is captivating, with its simplicity and elegance. But what is single line art and what makes it a standout in the realm of visual creativity.
DEFINING SINGLE LINE ART
Single line art, as the name suggests, is a form of artistic expression created using a single, continuous line. Unlike my architectural art which uses strokes and shapes that are built up through various lines and layers, single line art is all about fluidity and coherence throughout the entire composition. This minimalist approach often results in dramatic, aesthetically pleasing and thought-provoking pieces that convey a sense of simplicity and sophistication.

THE ORIGINS OF SINGLE LINE ART
While single line art has become quite popular, both with the prints that I sell and through commissions, the roots of single line art can be traced back to the early 20th century with the art movement known as "contour drawing." Artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse explored the concept of drawing without lifting the pen, emphasising the importance of continuous lines in capturing the essence of the subject. The idea was to convey a sense of immediacy and spontaneity in the artwork.
What makes my single art stand out is that, while many artists will use tablets and graphic design software to create intricate and detailed pieces without the constraints of physical mediums, everything I do is directly on paper using freehand. I feel that this style within the single line art genre, gives my art a realistic and unique charm.
THE PROCESS OF CREATING
SINGLE LINE ART
Creating a single line artwork requires a combination of skill, precision, and creativity. I must plan the composition carefully, considering the entire image as a continuous flow. Mistakes are not easily rectified, making the process both challenging and rewarding. I will take time to sketch a rough outline before committing to a single line that still allows my creativity to flow within the confines of a base idea.
